June 14 -18, 2010

Well this looks like this will be my last post. Sadly, there is little to say. I made a time capsule spread as an in-class assignment. I'm not sure if it will end up in the yearbook, so I will have to wait and find out I guess!
That was pretty much what I did for the week, I didn't go to class much this week because of my super busy exam schedule which started last friday.
I had a lot of fun in the class this year, and I hope that my contributions were of good use to the yearbook! What a good semester, now here comes summer!

June 7 - 11, 2010

On Monday, I worked on the track and field spread, starting to fill in all the captions and the cross country body copy. This is taking up alot of my time!
On Tuesday, I continued to work on the track and field spread, and organized all the photos and captions, and just tweaked the spread a lot.
On Wednesday, I was running around getting information for the track and field body copy, and tweaking the spread.
On Thursday, I had most of the spread put together. I just had to get the track and field body copy, and fill in some extra things!
On Friday, I finished the spread! I got the body copy finished, and everything is set! Here is a photo of my accomplishment!

May 31 - June 4, 2010

On Monday, I worked on the groups spread by fixing up the Duke of Ed body copy, and also the Book Club's body copy. I also just tweaked the photos and their placement.
On Tuesday, I worked on the groups spread. I made the body copy of the Free the Children spread again, because I deleted it by accident. I worked on the spread for the rest of the day, just tweaking it and making it look nice.
On Wednesday, I finished up my Groups page featuring Duke of Ed, Free the Children, and the Book Club. I had to finish up the by posting a business card sized add, fill in the missing links of photos, and spell check and have the spread proofread by the librarian. It's nice to have another spread done! At the top is the spread that I made!
On Thursday, I edited photos that I wanted to use for the Track and Field/Cross Country spread. There were lots of Track pictures to choose from, but not much for Cross Country. I make a great edit photo of a female grade 9 student running track. I took the background and blurred it to look like she was running very fast. I also discovered the smart brush tool on Adobe Photoshop, and used that to make the grass greener, and add contrast to certain parts of the photo. Editing and photoshoping the photos took up the whole class.
On Friday, I began to create the Track and Field/Cross Country spread, and placing the pictures where I wanted them to go. I also had to make exceptions to some cross conutry photos that weren't that great because of the little selection there were to choose from. As requested by Mr. Wrigley, the class posted a picture showing good use of light, and mine is at the top of the post. Also at the top is the photo I edited on Thursday.

May 24 - 28, 2010

On Monday, there was no school because it was Victoria Day, meaning it was a holiday! However, I had my French IB Exam that day, so I came in for a couple hours to write that!
On Tuesday, I was absent for this class because I had the IB Group 4 Project conducting day out at Camp Korah! A fun day filled with bugs and sun!
On Wednesday, I did some running around the school getting information for one of the groups spread. I got information for the Book Club body copy, Duke of Ed body copy, as well as interviewing friend and creator of the Free the Children group at Korah, Lesia Kinach.
On Thursday, I wrote up the interview assignment for the class, listening to the mp3 file and copying down what Lesia said. I typed it onto WordPerfect and handed it in that day.
On Friday, I worked on the group spread of Duke of Ed, Free the Children and the Book Club. I decided to place an add in the area of the Book Club, and I'm almost finished its body copy. I added some photos from the Free the Children bake sale, and finished the page on Duke of Ed! Almost finished the entire spread! Above is a picture that includes patterns in the photo, as requested to be posted by Mr. Wrigley.

May 17 - 21, 2010

On Monday, the class was assigned to work on their second spread, theme questions, the interview assignment, and work on ad sales. I was working on the theme assignment and a spread I was working on, and I added to the book club to my spread. So now the groups that I am using on the spread is Duke of Ed, Free the Children, and the Book Club.
On Tuesday, the class continued on the weeks assignment. I was continuing with the theme assignment, stuck to think of what kind of design the cover and the title page would look like. Hopefully an ideas comes soon!
On Wednesday, I updated my blog. I created posts for all the weeks I missed from the blog site not working. I also did more on my second spread.
On Thursday, I worked on my spread and my theme assignment further, still looking for creative ideas for the title page and cover!
On Friday, I was absent that day.

May 3 - 7, 2010

On Monday, the class was given a package on journalism, including how to conduct interviews and write body copies for the yearbook. There were questions that were attached to the package, and that was to be due for the end of the week. I worked on that throughout the class.
On Tuesday, I continued to work on the journalism questions that were assigned the previous day. I also was assigned to create the portraits title page for the yearbook! So after I was finished the questions I began looking for pictures I could use for the title page.
On Wednesday, I began working further on the portraits title page. I found lots of pictures. I edited them and placed them randomly on the spread and made a final desicion on the size of the pictures.
On Thursday, I organized the spread and placed all the pictures where I wanted them and thought of ways to make the title page look appealing. I got mostly all of that done that day, I just needed a background.
On Friday, I got all the photos on the title page organized, and I picked a background for the page. The only adjustment that I needed was to take a specific photo of a few friends that I could use for the page. It will be finished next week!

Edit: Here is the photo of the portraits title page above!

April 26 - 29, 2010

On Monday, the class worked on our spreads and took pictures. It was still difficult with the computer system, so for the time being I had to save my work to my desktop.
On Tuesday, the cleaned out our I-drives, and saved everything as a back up to USB sticks to fix the computer problems. Suprisingly, they began working once most of my work was taken off! Thank God! haha
On Wednesday, the class learned how to take pictures and turn them into colouring book-type pictures, meaning the colour would be taken out, and the photo would look like it was drawn. I created one of Brianna Harris and I think it looks awesome! Take a look up top!
On Thursday, I worked on my blog and putting my Top 10 photos onto the blog, and helped out around the class.
On Friday, we had a PD DAY! :) Nice long weekend!

May 10 - 14, 2010

On Monday, there was a supply teacher in the class. The class was given a package on themes for yearbooks. It had questions that had to be answered, and also to a sheet for us to use so we could design our own theme for the next years yearbook. The theme I thought of was, "We'll Always Be Together." I thought this was a good theme because it related to the future grade nines and how they will make long-lasting friendships when they begin high school, the friendship that will last longer than high school for the years graduates, and it also related to the musical that Korah will be hosting next year, Grease. It is one of the lyrics of one of the main songs in the musical. Overall, I thought this was an upbeat theme for a yearbook. All I needed after that was a design for a cover, the title page, and the dividers.
On Tuesday,I continued on working on the theme questions from the package, and thinking of futhur ideas for the theme I was thinking about. I also was helping others with spreads and their computers.
On Wednesday, I was in class for a half hour because I was going to a field trip at Algoma University for the rest of the day. For that half an hour of class I was thinking of ideas for the cover, title page, and dividers to go with the theme I was thinking of for next years yearbook. I then had to leave and went on my field trip.
On Thursday, I handed in my theme questions and I continued to think of graphic ideas for my theme that I created. I thought of using our school colours, incorporating certain graphics, and using certain phrases for the cover, but I couldn't think of anything that really suited the theme. I hope I think of something soon.
On Friday, I wrote my weekly blog post, and continued on working on my theme I wanted to hand in and possibly use for the yearbook.

April 19 - 23, 2010

Throughout the week, many of the days were uneventful due to the computer system problems that were occuring during this time. The memory was full on every computer in the class, so the only way that it we could save our work and photos were to save them on the desktop of the computer, or save and backup the work to a USB stick. However, I went out this week for some photos with classmates and most of the pictures turned out really great! I even used some for the Top 10 Tips post! Also, the photo ease templates were due at this time.

April 12 - 16, 2010

On Monday, the class learned how the aperture, shutter, and shutter speed works in a manual, older camera. The class was given cameras and got to see how they worked ourselves. After that, I worked on creating an ad for the Market Mall Pharmacy to be featured in the yearbook.
On Tuesday, the class dicussed futhur on the use of aperture, shutter, and shutter speed, and related it to our Top 10 Tip of the Week, which is "Lock in the focus." After that, I organized my ads page for the yearbook, and placing yearbook photos to the page to give it more appeal so more will read the ads when looking at the photos.
On Wednesday, I was absent because I attended a school field trip at White Pines, about careers in certain businesses.
On Thursday, the class was assignned a task to create a spread of their own photos using the program PhotoEase from Friesens Tools, a part of InDesign CS2. It automatically changes photos to CMYK and 300 dpi, and there are templates you can you for the spread. I chose a template, and placed my photos in them and that is what I worked on for the rest of the class.
On Friday, I took photos for the Top 10 Tip of the Week, which can be seen in the seperate blog post, for the rest of the class I worked on the PhotoEase assignment.

Thursday, April 8, 2010

April 6 - 9, 2010

On Tuesday, I was working on the sports title page for the yearbook. I got all the pictures I wanted resized and changed the colour to CMYK, and cropped and adjusted to the way I liked them. I got all the photos in and moved them around the page to the way I liked them. It was almost finished by the end of class.
On Wednesday, I finished the sports title page for the yearbook, and I like it alot. See the picture? Also, I took photos for the Top 10 Tip of the Week, which was "Move it from the middle." You can see the pictures in the Top 10 Tips post.
On Thursday, I worked independently on an assignment from another class because on that day, I had finished all work needed to be done for the week, so I got a nice class to relax pretty much.
On Friday, I was assigned to create the ads page for the yearbook. I took the scanned business card ads that the folder had so far, and put them onto a yearbook template. I organized them, but I cannot finish the spread until I take some candid photos for the page, and waiting for the other adds to come in.

March 29 - April 1, 2010

On Monday, the class recieved a handout on how to use a camera properly, and helpful tips on taking photos and handling the camera. That day, I also worked on my spread for the Duke of Edinburgh Club. I have it almost finished, I just need a background, and I have to begin the next page about the club Free the Children.
On Tuesday, I took photos for the Top 10 Tip of the Week, which was "Move in close." You can see in the Top 10 Tips Photos for the picture I took this week. After that, I continued to work on more of the spread.
On Wednesday, the class read through some of the handout recieved on Monday, and learned about the use of depth of field. Since I could no longer do more on my spread till I am able to take photos for the Free the Children group, I was assigned to start the title page for the Sports section of the yearbook, and possibly the portrait title page. I began to think of ideas for those on that day.
On Thursday, the class read through more of Monday's handout, and we discussed tips on how to use a camera properly. We also critiqued photos taken by the class on Earth Hour, to see how the class used the natural light that was in the school. After that, I continued to plan the some of the title pages for the yearbook.

Friday, March 26, 2010

March 22 - March 26, 2010

On Monday, I worked on my spread.
On Tuesday, the class learned how to use the clone tool. We learned how to hide parts of a photo by covering it with its background, and duplicating or cloning a certain subject in the photo. After this, myself and the class continued working on their spreads.
On Wednesday, I finished my yearbook spread of the Junior and Senior Girls' Volleyball, and I recieved a 4+ on the spread! Look at it! :) Also, I began to start my other spread I wanted to work on, which was about some of the groups at Korah, the Duke of Edinburgh club and Free the Children (both of which I am currently involved in).
On Thursday, the class learned how to use the move tool on Adobe Photoshop Elements, and took 2 photos and made them one, and also used the erase tool to make the subject that was added to the original photo, look like it was there in the beginning. Also, I called my mother's real estate agency, Castle Realty, to purchase and ad for the yearbook. They purchased a business card size ad, and it will actually be my mother's business card that will be used for the yearbook! After that, I continued to work on my new spread.
On Friday, It was Earth Hour today at school, and the class was given a photo assignment to take pictures in the dark without the use of flash, so we can learn how to use the light we are given to take good pictures. The class uploaded them to the computers too.

Monday, March 22, 2010

March 8 - March 11, 2010

On Monday, the class worked on their spreads. I'm finishing up the Volleyball spread. I hope to touch it up even more and get it all set and ready to go to be published for the yearbook!
On Tuesday, the class learned how to change photos to black and white and make certain areas of the black and white photo, have colour using the selection and magnetic lasso tool. Here is a photo of showing the end product of this.
On Wednesday, at the beginning of class we had a quiz on Digital Terms, such as terms like Resolution, Pixel, Mega pixel, Megabyte, Kilobyte, Byte, Bit, JPEG, Memory Card, and Gigabyte. I hope I did well on it! After the quiz I went to take pictures for this week's top 10 tip: use a plain background. I took photos with a classmate and they can be seen in the post as the two newest photos.
On Thursday, there was a guest speaker from Friesons to talk to us about the yearbook. I was unfortunately not there at the time because I was absent.

Friday, March 5, 2010

March 1 - March 5, 2010

On Monday, the class continued on creating their spreads that are going to be used for the yearbook. I continued with the process of creating my volleyball spread. Also, I photographed the trophy and banner won by the junior girl's volleyball team in the photo-taking area of the class. Hopefully these will contribute to my spread.
On Tuesday, the class learned how to use the program Adobe Photoshop Elements, and with that program the class learned how get rid of the background of photos so the selected item can easily be placed in spreads and other photo projects. The photo we did this with was the photo I took the previous day, of the NOSSA banner won by the junior girl's volleyball team. Here is a photo (top) of the banner in front of a circle, with the banner being used as clipart.
On Wednesday, the class continued to work on their yearbook spreads, as well, we were assigned to take photos based on one of the Top 10 Tips, which was "get down to their level." I took some great photos with a classmate, and they can be seen below in the Top 10 Tips post.
On Thursday, the class was not used because of a battery explosion caused by the Robotics Team, so the class stayed in the library and did other work, or took pictures for the Top 10 Tips assignment. I also had my French Oral that day for IB, I hope I did alright!
On Friday, the class continued with their yearbook spreads, and also got a handout on digital terms which will be needed to know for a quiz next Wednesday!

Top 10 Tips Photos

These photos represent the Top 10 Tips for Photography. One tip will be displayed for every week.

Week 1 - Get down to their level (first 2 photos). Direct eye contact can be as engaging in a picture as it is in real life. When taking a picture of someone, hold the camera at the person's eye level to unleash the power of those magnetic gazes and mesmerizing smiles. For children, that means stooping to their level. And your subject need not always stare at the camera. All by itself that eye level angle will create a personal and inviting feeling that pulls you into the picture.

Week 2 - Use a plain background (photos 3 and 4). A plain background shows off the subject you are photographing. When you look through the camera viewfinder, force yourself to study the area surrounding your object. Make sure no poles grow from your head to your favourite niece and that no cars seem to dangle from her ears.

Week 3 - Use flash outdoors (photos 5 and 6). Bright sun can create unattractive deep facial shadows. Eliminate the shadows by using your flash to lighten the face. When taking people picures on sunny days, turn your flash on. You many have a choice of fill-flash mode or full-flash mode. If the person is within five feet, use the fill-flash mode; beyond five feet, use the full-flash mode.

Week 4 - Move in close (photos 7 and 8). If your subject is smaller than a car, take a step or two closer before taking the picture and zoom in on your subject. Your goal is to fill the picture area with the subject you are photographing.

Week 5 - Move it from the middle (photos 9 and 10). Centre-stage is a great place for a preformer to be. However, the middle of your picture is not the best place for your subject. Bring your picture to life by simply moving your subject away from the middle of your picture. Start by playing tick-tack-toe with subject position. Imagine a tick-tack-toe grid in your viewfinder. Now place your important subject at one of the intersections of the lines.
You'll need to lock focus if you have an auto-focus camera because most of them focus on whatever is in the centre of the viewfinder.

Week 6 - Lock the focus (photos 11 and 12). If your subject is not in the center of the picture, you need to lock the focus to create a sharp picture. Most auto-focus cameras focus on whatever is in the centre of the picture. But to improve pictures, you will often want to move the subject away from the centre of the picture. If you don't want a blurred picture, you'll need to first lock the focus with the subject in the middle and then recompose the picture so the subject is away from the middle.
Usually, you can lock the focus in three steps. First, center the subject and press and hold the shutter button halfway down. Second, reposition your camera (while still holding the shutter button) so the subject is away from the center. And third, finish by pressing th shutter button all the way down to take the picture.

Week 7 - Know your flash's range (photos 13 and 14). THe number one flash mistake is taking pictures beyond the flash's range. Why is this a mistake? Because pictures taken beyond the maximum flash range will be too dark. For many cameras, the maximum flash range is less than 15 feet -- about 5 steps away. In photo 13, you can see the flash's range, and how the subject is too far away, and the flash did not reach the subject, so therefore the picture is dark. However in photo 14, the flash is close enough for the picture to lighten up and the subject is brighter than in the previous photo.

Week 8 - Watch the light (photos 15 and 16). Next to the subject, the most important part of every picture is the light. It affects the appearance of everything you photograph. On a great-grandmother, bright sunlight from the side can enhance wrinkles. But soft light of a cloudy day can subdue those same wrinkles. Don't like the light on your subject? Move yourself or your subject. For landscapes, try to take pictures early or late in the day when the light is orangish and rakes across the land. In photo 15, you can see how shadows affect the subject, it covers some of the subjects face, and his placement should have been changed. However, in photo 16, the light is enhancing and creating a great picture. The light brigten's the coat of the dog, and makes a nice light picture.

Week 9- Take some vertical pictures (photos 17 and 18). Is your camera vertically challenged? It is if you never turn it sideways to take a vertical picture. All sorts of things look better in a vertical picture.

Week 10 - Be a picture director. Take control of your picture-taking and watch your pictures dramatically improve. Become a picture director, not just a passive picture-taker. A picture director takes charge. A picture director picks the location: "Everybody go outside to the backyard." A picture director adds props: "Girls, put on your pink sunglasses." A picture director arranges people: "Now move in close, and lean toward the camera."

February 22 - February 26, 2010

On Monday, the class had a test on the layout of a yearbook spread. Then for the rest of the class, the time was used to finish up the practice spread of the girl's basketball spread, which I happily already finished! That day we also learned how to create layers and backgrounds.
On Tuesday, the class learned how to place clip art into a yearbook template, and how to get rid of the outside white space so the picture could be easily placed and used in a spread. These we marked by the teacher on how one listened to the lesson and created a good transparent-background clipart. That night, I was also sent on a photo assignment to take pictures at the Duke of Edinburgh ceremony, and I took group shots of the bronzes, silvers, and golds.
On Wednesday, the class got back their test marks, and some got their marks back on their practice spread, and I received both. That day, while the class was finishing up on their practice spreads, I went ahead and began choosing photos for the spread I am to be creating for the yearbook, which is the girl's volleyball spread. I chose a few photos that day, and resampled them, changed their mode to CMYK, and cropped them to the way I liked them.
On the days of Thursday and Friday, I was absent because of an extremely sore throat! Hope I didn't miss alot!

Monday, February 22, 2010

February 15 - February 19, 2010

On Monday, we had no school, yay holiday!
On Tuesday, the class continued on the practice spread of the Girl's Basketball Teams, and that day the class focused on captions for the spread, and how to make them sound better, and involve the 6 W's, which are who, what, where, when, why, and how. That day, I continued to touch up my spread.
On Wednesday, the class learned how to create secondary headlines, and make them look appealing to the reader. The secondary title I chose was "Girl's Basketball: Skill with Style."
On Thursday, the class learned how to create extra graphics for the spread such as rule lines and colour boxes, to make the spread look more appealing, and allow certain parts of the spread to stand out.
On Friday, we had no class because there was a school assembly on character, and it involved the musical talents of Errol Lee, a recording artist promoting character and anti-bullying.
The picture on my blog this week is teh jpeg of my yearbook spread of the Girl's Basketball team, I really enjoyed making this spread and I hope to make many more!

Suessical Photos

Here are some photos of Suessical the Musical that I took while on a photo assignment on Tuesday February 9. 2010.

February 8 - February 12, 2010

On Monday, we focused on creating the girl's basketball spread for the yearbook. We learned how to resize and resample and image, so it can be used in the yearbook. The pictures were changed from 72 dpi to 300 dpi, while maintaining its size. We also changed the brightness, constrast, and intensity of the photos to the way we want them in the spread.
On Tuesday, I was sent on a photo assignment to take photos of Suessical the Musical at our school. It was fun watching the show as well as taking great photos that could potentially be used in the yearbook. That was a class well spent, althought not necessarily in it, I was still learning things.
On Wednesday, the class focused on placing captions and learning the whole layout of the girls basketball spread. The class was shown how to place captions in the spread, and what to talk about inside the captions. I had a fun, but somewhat difficult time thinking of clever captions for the spread, but I managed to do them all. I also had a photo assignment that day after school to take pictures of the girl's junior and senior volleyball team, which I am involved in as well.
On Thursday, we continued progresing with the girl's basketball spread with captions, the body copy, and everything else that was taught but still incomplete. I tried to finish up as much as I could, and also started experimenting with titles for the spread.
On Friday, we learned a new technique that could potentially be used in the yearbook, and that was placing an image in text. This was done by typing text, creating an outline and placing a photo inside it. Above is the text I created with an image of Suessical the Musical inside it.

Februrary 1 - February 5 2010

On Monday and Tuesday, we created a mosaic in class, using Adobe InDesign CS2. The class, including myself, learned how to create a mosaic by learning how to create a rectangle frame, adding strokes to the frames, the process of step and repeat to add multiple frames, rotating the frames, creating a compound path, and placing the photos inside the frame. Above is the picture of my mosaic.
Throughout the week the computers have been extremely so, and on Wednesday and Thursday it was basically impossible to complete any work without it consuming alot of class time, and restarting the computer alot. Basically, Tetris was the only option.
On Friday, the computers were working again, and we were able to change pictures of the Girls Basketball team from RGB form to CMYK form, changing the resolution, and adjusting the picture to the way we wanted it by cropping and changing the brightness and contrast. This was all done on Corel PhotoPaint.
